Debt counselling services are standardised across South Africa, under the National Credit At of 2007. This means that debt counsellor services are subject to a closely regulated set of operational guidelines and must adhere to fee structure and reporting recommendations. As such, all debt management companies should be able to produce documentation of their NCR accreditation. Additionally, counsellors should work quickly to assist debtors, communicating with creditors and filing a debt review within 60 days of accepting an application. They then work to restructure the client’s budget to allow for payments to creditors, which will also be renegotiated on the consumer’s behalf.
